VMware Snapshot Management: Best Practices and Common Risks

Introduction

VMware snapshots provide a point-in-time representation of a virtual machine’s virtual disk state. They are useful for short-term testing, maintenance, and controlled change operations.

However, snapshots are not intended to replace backups and should not be left active indefinitely.

1. Understand VMware Snapshots

A snapshot records changes made to a virtual machine after the snapshot is created.

Common use cases include:

  • Application testing.
  • Short maintenance windows.
  • Configuration changes.
  • Upgrade preparation.
  • Temporary rollback points.

Snapshots should have a clearly defined purpose and expiration time.

2. Review Existing Snapshots

Before creating a new snapshot, check whether the VM already has snapshots.

Review:

  • Snapshot age.
  • Snapshot size.
  • Snapshot hierarchy.
  • Datastore capacity.
  • VM performance.

Avoid creating unnecessary snapshot chains.

3. Monitor Datastore Capacity

Snapshot growth consumes datastore space.

Monitor:

  • Free capacity.
  • Snapshot growth.
  • Virtual disk size.
  • Storage latency.

WARNING

A rapidly growing snapshot can consume available datastore capacity and potentially affect multiple workloads sharing the same datastore.

4. Create Snapshots Carefully

Before creating a snapshot, document:

  1. VM name.
  2. Reason for snapshot.
  3. Creation time.
  4. Expected retention.
  5. Responsible administrator.

Use application-consistent options where appropriate and supported.

5. Remove Snapshots After Maintenance

Once the maintenance or testing activity is complete, remove snapshots that are no longer required.

Monitor the consolidation process after deletion.

A snapshot removal operation may require additional datastore space and I/O while changes are merged.

IMPORTANT

Do not repeatedly create new snapshots as a replacement for removing an existing snapshot strategy.

6. Snapshot Troubleshooting

If a snapshot cannot be removed normally, review:

  • Datastore free space.
  • Snapshot chain.
  • VM disk state.
  • Consolidation status.
  • Host and vCenter events.

If the VM shows a consolidation warning, investigate before attempting repeated operations.
