VMware vMotion: Planning and Troubleshooting

Introduction

vMotion allows running virtual machines to move between compatible ESXi hosts with minimal service interruption. It is commonly used for maintenance, workload balancing, and resource management.

Successful vMotion operations depend on compatible hosts, reliable networking, and appropriate VM configuration.

1. Understand vMotion Networking

vMotion traffic is carried through a dedicated VMkernel interface.

The interface should have:

  • A valid IP address.
  • Correct VLAN configuration.
  • Proper MTU.
  • Connectivity to peer hosts.
  • vMotion service enabled.

Review VMkernel interfaces:

esxcli network ip interface list

2. Validate Host Compatibility

Before migrating a virtual machine, verify that the source and destination hosts are compatible.

Check:

  • CPU compatibility.
  • ESXi versions.
  • Network configuration.
  • Datastore availability.
  • VM hardware version.
  • Licensing requirements.

WARNING

CPU incompatibility can prevent vMotion even when networking and storage are fully operational.

3. Check Network Connectivity

Verify that the vMotion VMkernel interfaces can communicate.

Test connectivity between hosts:

vmkping -I vmk1 10.20.30.12

For environments using larger MTU values, validate the configured packet size as well.

4. Review Storage Dependencies

Traditional vMotion can require both hosts to access the virtual machine’s storage.

Verify:

  • Datastore accessibility.
  • Storage paths.
  • VM files.
  • Virtual disk configuration.
  • Storage policy requirements.

A storage connectivity problem can prevent migration even when the vMotion network is healthy.

5. Troubleshoot Failed Migrations

When a migration fails, review the error message carefully.

Common causes include:

  • CPU incompatibility.
  • Missing network port group.
  • Datastore unavailable.
  • Incorrect VMkernel configuration.
  • Network connectivity problems.
  • Resource constraints.

Check the source and destination hosts independently before retrying.

6. Final Validation

Before enabling regular workload migration, confirm:

  • vMotion VMkernel adapters are operational.
  • Hosts can communicate.
  • Required port groups exist.
  • Storage is accessible.
  • CPU compatibility is configured.
  • No critical host alarms remain.
